This Overwater Pickleball Court is Causing a ‘Racket’

The pickleball craze continues! Not content to dominate community parks around North America, the sociable, ‘tennis light’ paddle sport is taking root in holiday destinations – not just on land resorts and hotels, but also at sea, and, in the latest twist, overwater!

Pickleball on the Rivers of Europe

AmaWaterways made waves when it became the first river cruise line to introduce a full-sized pickleball court (pictured, below). That’s courtesy of the extraordinary (for river cruise ships) size of the AmaMagna, the largest river cruise ship in Europe, about double the width of most other river cruise ships.

That’s enough extra space to accommodate a regulation-sized pickleball court that debuted at the beginning of the 2024 European river cruise season. The addition to the amenities on the AmaMagna’s Sun Deck allows guests of all ages to take a swing while the ship is docked in the heart of picturesque towns along the Danube river.

Sports and wellness innovation is standard for AmaWaterways. It pioneered active river cruising almost 20 years ago by introducing bikes on board, which has become almost standard on many river cruises today.

European-based Amadeus River Cruises also offers guests the opportunity to play pickleball on the top deck of the Amadeus Silver III.

Recognizing the growing popularity of the sport and the weather and motion conditions that limit onboard play, Amadeus launched specialized pickleball itineraries in 2023 that included shore excursions and pre- and post-cruise extension packages for even more guests to be able to visit local clubs and courts to play.

Pickleball at Sea

On the decks of an ocean-going cruise ship, it’s easier to find space and create controlled conditions for a pickleball court, with basketball, tennis, volleyball courts already in play on many of the bigger ocean vessels.

Cruise lines are answering the growing call to provide opportunities to play what the Sports and Fitness Industry Association calls “America’s fastest-growing sport.”

Holland America Line is the “exclusive cruise line partner of the Professional Pickeball Association,” with all its ships featuring courts with top-deck views and equipment available for a match anytime weather allows.

Celebrity Cruises (pictured above), Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and now, even British luxury line Cunard on its new ship the Queen Annehave all embraced the pickleball trend.

But not all ships on every cruise line have pickleball, even if one or two (sometimes the newest ships only) in the fleet include a court. In addition, some courts are indoors and some are not full sized.

Overwater Pickleball in the Adriatic Sea

And now, one cruise operator has taken pickleball to another level - taking it off the deck and overwater. Explorateur Journeys’ 30-guest mega-yacht Aretha has a new, inflatable pickleball court (pictured, top, courtesy of Via Croatia), which allows guests to play over the water of the Adriatic on its Croatian itineraries.

The court is held steady and strong adjacent to the ship and besides the overwater experience, cruise guests along this journey are also treated to the chance to play in a variety of extraordinary settings such as the sparkling islands of Šćedro Brac.

It's an incredibly indulgent scenario, playing in turquoise blue water, surrounded by secluded islands and ancient ruins, clay roofs and hillside vineyards. Panda-monium! New Pandas Debut This Year in Two American Cities

There will soon be two new places in the U.S. to visit China’s iconic and endearing national animal. The giant panda, with its unmistakeable black and white markings and adorable fuzzy features, is a keystone species and symbol of global conservations efforts – and it’s one of the ‘bucket list’ animals many people want to experience in person.

A pair of pandas from China make their eagerly awaited public debut at the San Diego Zoo on August 8, 2024. Xin Bao and Yun Chuan are the first giant pandas to enter the United States in over two decades.

'Our newest residents will bring joy to our visitors and symbolize the enduring spirit of international conservation efforts. Together with our partners, we continue to make significant strides in ensuring a hopeful future for this iconic species,” said the President and CEO of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

The two pandas are making their home at the San Diego Zoo in a newly re-imagined Panda Ridge. The space is four times larger than the zoo’s previous panda habitat and is inspired by giant pandas’ native habitats in the Sichuan, Gansu and Shanxi provinces of China. The zoo’s new panda habitat emulates mountains, canyons, and cliffs and features new shade trees for climbing, a diverse array of plants, and rolling hillsides that allow Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to navigate and explore vertically.

The new pair marks a return of pandas to the San Diego Zoo, where officials note it’s a historic moment for the species. As keystone wildlife, giant pandas are a bell weather for the delicate environment that supports not just these iconic animals, but the many other, less iconic species integral to the wellbeing of the ecosystem.

Giant pandas are now found in the wild only in protected forests and hills of central China. Their diet consists 98% of bamboo – and they must eat vast quantities to extract enough nutrition to maintain their size. Human activity has been jeopardizing their environment and putting pressure on these pandas. It’s estimated there are about 2000 left in the wild.

Conservation efforts in China are aimed at safeguarding and shoring up the animals’ remaining habitat, protecting wild pandas and the future population. Panda centres in the country are part of those efforts to make a difference for these iconic species.

As a long-standing national cultural and natural treasure and symbol of harmony in China, sending pandas to other countries has become a gesture of international friendship. The new breeding pair of pandas in San Diego are among hundreds gifted or temporarily loaned to zoos around the world.

In addition, panda residencies in zoos in other countries usually include partnerships in research and conservation, including breeding programs, that engage the public in efforts to protect the panda and its habitat in the wild, ensure the species’ genetic diversity and support conservation as a whole.

For example, the new pandas in residence in the San Diego Zoo are the latest achievement of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, a non-profit organization that supports conservation science through global partnerships. Through wildlife care, science expertise and collaboration, more than 44 endangered species have been reintroduced to native habitats.

Another new breeding pair of giant pandas arrives at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. by the end of 2024, marking the beloved species’ return to that city. The zoo has a half-century history of panda partnerships with China.

The only other place in the U.S or Canada to see giant pandas right now is in Zoo Atlanta, which at time of publication of this article has four, including the first twin panda cubs born in America this century. (The double happiness of the twins is even more significant, considering that if a mother panda in the wild has two cubs, usually only one survives.)

Zoo programs like these pandas in residence are at the leading edge of wildlife conservation science. They also give many of us the opportunity to get up close to a panda if we never make that bucket list trip to China.

3 Idyllic Places to Practice Japanese 'Forest Bathing'

Your next vacation may be the perfect time to take up shinrin-yoku, or ‘forest bathing.’ Wellness fans around the world are embracing the Japanese practice of immersing yourself deeply into the atmosphere of the woods, and the broader concept of spending more time in nature to improve your health and well-being.

Renowned for their centuries-old practices of ritualized baths in outdoor or indoor thermal hot springs that dot Japan, the newer term of ‘forest bathing’ perhaps attempts to reflect how immersion in nature confers similar wellness benefits on participants as thermal baths.

Unlike hiking or nature walks, forest bathing is less about physical exercise and more about being mindful and connecting with nature through all five senses.

It’s deeply rooted in Japan’s cultural and spiritual traditions, including its indigenous Shinto spirituality, which sees forests – all natural spaces – as sacred places where spirits live, as well as pan-Asian Buddhism, which emphasizes mindfulness and presence. In that way, shinrin-yoku reflects Japanese Shinto-Buddhism as a philosophy and a holistic practice that nurtures both mind and body.

How to Practice Shinrin-Yoku

The best part of forest bathing? It requires no special skills, equipment or fitness level. Just walk. It’s not a race. Or even a hike.

Shinrin-yoku involves just walking slowly through a forest, pausing to observe the surroundings, breathing deeply, and engaging your senses. Mindful of never harming anything in the forest, participants are still encouraged to touch the bark of trees, listen to the rustling of leaves, smell the forest air, and even taste the fresh, clean air. The goal is to be present in the moment and to experience the forest with a sense of wonder, like it’s the very first time you’ve ever been in a forest.

Maybe it is the first time you’ve ever experienced a forest this way.

The Benefits are Not Just ‘In Your Head’

Numerous scientific studies have validated the health benefits of forest bathing. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress hormones like cortisol, lower blood pressure, and boost the immune system. It also enhances mood, increases energy levels, and improves sleep. One significant finding is that phytoncides, natural oils released by trees, have antimicrobial properties that can boost the human immune system. Forest bathing can also improve mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and symptoms of ADHD.

A World-wide Phenomenon

While shinrin-yoku originated in Japan, its benefits have led to global adoption. Countries like South Korea, Finland, and the United States have incorporated forest therapy into wellness programs.

In Japan, there are designated forest therapy bases with guided sessions led by trained practitioners. Modern technology has even brought virtual forest bathing experiences to those who cannot access natural forests.

Surf’s Up! The Summer Games Competition Happening 10,000 Miles from Paris

On the other side of the earth from the epicenter of the Paris Summer Games, one competition is returning to its roots – while still flying the French flag. For the second Summer Games in a row, surfing is part of the Olympic Games. And while many of the Summer Games competitions are spread around the French capital and even as far away as its Mediterranean coast, mainland France can’t boast the kind of competitive surfing conditions at this time of the year required of Olympic champions.

Cue Teahuop’o, Tahiti, home to one of the world’s greatest waves and surf breaks, with heavy, barreling waves and vibrant surfing culture. It’s a highlight of the international surfing competition circuit – and the most distant part of France.

10,000 miles from Paris, Tahiti is hosting the surfing events for the Paris Olympics. It also happens to be the heart and home of the origins of the sport and the movement of surfing.

Surfing originated in Polynesia, with evidence suggesting that the sport was practiced in Tahiti and other Polynesian islands long before Western contact. The earliest recorded accounts of surfing come from European explorers, such as the famous explorer Captain James Cook, who witnessed Polynesians surfing in Tahiti in the 18th century.

Surfing was an integral part of Polynesian and Tahitian culture, including in Tahiti. It was more than just a sport; it was a deeply spiritual and social activity that held significant cultural meaning.

The largest island in French Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean, Tahiti is nonetheless part of France, and Tahitians are French citizens. French Polynesia is composed of several groups of islands, with Tahiti being the most populous and well-known.

Norway is so famous for its fjords, the Norwegian word has become part of the international travel dialect. In languages around the world, ‘fjord’ means a deep, natural sea channel reaching far inland, surrounded by dramatic cliffs carved millennia ago by glaciers on their way to the sea.

According to Visit Norway, the word ‘fjord’ has Viking roots, relating to the phrase for a ‘crossing point.’

The vast system of fjords along Norway’s coast certainly helps explain ancient Norse seafaring culture; skillful travel over water would be much better than trying to travel around steep cliffs by land.

Fjords are also the reason travel – especially cruise travel – to Norway is high on many travel bucket lists. They not only define Norway’s geography but also are the icon of its natural beauty and have shaped Norwegian cultural heritage.

Exactlty How Many Fjords are in Norway?

Norway has over 1000 fjords, each poking into the coastal landscape like a finger. As the crow flies, the country’s coast is about 15,500 miles long. But if you were to straighten out all the fjords, it would be more than 3 times that length – over 51,000 miles long!

Norway’s Four Most Famous Fjords

1. Sognefjord is the “King of Fjords” and the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. It extends over 124 miles inland and reaches depths of 4300 feet! The fjord's landscape, with its glaciers, waterfalls, and fertile valleys, makes it a symbol of Norway’s natural beauty. While sailing the fjord is a ‘must,’ there are more ways to experience Sognefjord: from hiking in the Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen national parks to visiting the historic Stave Churches in Urnes and Borgund.

2. Geirangerfjord is possibly even more famous than Sognefjord, this UNESCO-listed natural wonder is renowned for its stunning beauty (pictured above). Cruising through this fjord, visitors are treated to panoramic views of cascading waterfalls like the Seven Sisters, the Suitor, and the Bridal Veil. The deep blue waters, set against its emerald cliffs, create unforgettable memories and photo opportunities. Geirangerfjord is also home to charming villages and historic farms that cling precariously to the steep slopes, offering a glimpse into traditional Norwegian life.

3. Nærøyfjord is another UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the narrowest in Europe, and its awe-inspiring scenery is best experienced from the water. The journey through Nærøyfjord showcases towering rock faces, lush valleys, and tranquil waters, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers and photographers. The small village of Gudvangen at the fjord’s end is a perfect base for exploring the area further.

4. Hardangerfjord has a character all its own, with a famous waterfall and glacier, renowned for cliffside fruit orchards and as the starting point for Norway’s most epic hiking trail. The stunning natural beauty of Hardangerfjord’s steep cliffs is transformed every spring, when apple, cherry and pear orchards cover the dramatic landscape with a lacy, fairy tale display of white and pink blossoms. The festivities of the Hardanger Blossom Festival add to the scenery for this magical time of the year. Hardangerfjord is also the origin of the iconic Trolltunga hike. The payoff of the hike is the Trolltunga (Troll’s Tongue) rock formation (pictured, top), which juts horizontally out like the mountain is sticking out its tongue!

New Record Set at Sea: World's Largest Pizza Party

Plenty of cruise lines swear they serve the best pizza. But only one cruise line can now claim to hold the Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Pizza Party. Over 60,000 slices of pie were served fresh from the oven over multiple ships across the Princess Cruises fleet simultaneously in July, 2024 to set the record.

World’s Largest Pizza Party By the Numbers:

· Total Weight of Dough Used: 6,512 pounds

· Total Weight of Flour Used: 3,417 pounds

· Total Weight of Pepperoni Slices Used:1,393 pounds

· Total Weight of Cheese Used: 2,323 pounds

The feat was staged in honor of Princess Cruises’ new partnership with Chef Tony Gemignani, the 13-time World Pizza Champion and dubbed the ‘greatest pizza maker in modern history.’

Chef Gemignani has created two pizzas exclusively for Princess, each with a blend of savory flavors and premium ingredients, from Soppressata sausage and hot honey to agave pesto and fresh goat cheese. The chef has also provided recipes for three of his signature, award-winning pizzas, and Princess Cruises expects the new partnership and recipes to help the cruise line rise from strength to strength in its quest to provide the best pizza at sea.

Chef Gemignani’s recipes will initially debut at Alfredo’s onboard the new Sun Princess, with plans to extend to the rest of the Princess fleet this summer. Chef Gemignani personally trained Princess chefs at his famous Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco and onboard Princess ships, ensuring all five pizzas are prepared to replicate his original, hand-crafted pizzas at sea.

Chef Gemignani is the most decorated pizzaiolo in American history, an award-winning chef, restaurateur, master instructor, philanthropist, founder of Slice House by Tony Gemignani, and author of PIZZA, The Pizza Bible, and The Pursuit of Pizza. Born and raised in Northern California, he opened his first restaurant in San Francisco in 2009 – Tony’s Pizza Napoletana. The restaurant was met with immediate success upon opening and was named the best pizzeria by multiple media outlets.

Over the course of his career, Chef Gemignani has achieved 13 World Pizza Champions, two-time Food Network Gold Medalist, four World Recird titles/records and opened more than 30 restaurants. He’s appeared on multiple television series and specials.

The new Chef Gemignani-designed pizzas will take center stage at Alfredo’s and Gigi’s specialty pizzerias, charming, sit-down venues, as well as the complimentary Slice locations found on the Lido Deck of Princess ships.

It’s some of the most incredible scenery along the middle Danube River! One of the absolute highlights of our river cruise on the Danube through Austria aboard the Riverside Mozart was the daytime scenic sailing through the wondrous ‘Danube Snare.’

The Danube is Europe’s longest river and the middle Danube is one of the most popular river cruise destinations in Europe - not just for magnificent cities like Budapest, Vienna, Linz and Passau. That middle section of the Danube between Hungary, through Austria, and into Germany is also home to incredible scenery you can only see from the river. No wonder, considering the river was the original and long-time ‘highway’ through the region, long before reliable land routes. Abbeys, vineyards and villages line the Danube – but it also winds through countryside you might not realize is as much a part of the region as its communities and culture.

The Danube Snare. The Danube Loop. There are a number of names in English for a geological phenomenon that has become a featured of the mighty Danube. Millennia ago when the Danube was powered by a continent covered by melting glaciers, it dug and shifted softer layers until it reached granite, washing out a deep – 1000-foot – ravine. Taking the path of least resistance, the water carved out a twisting path through granite deposits. The result was a Danube river that, in Upper Austria before the Danube enters Germany, winds back and forth on itself in hairpin turns that at one point almost forms a circle with a tiny island of land in the middle, like a donut.

As early as Roman times, navigators along the Danube knew about the Danube loop. Treacherous to pass, boats had to slow right down to navigate the twists and turns, making it a strategic vantage point along the Danube.

Today, much of the Schlogene Schlinge (Scholgen Loop) is a mesmerizing place of natural beauty: part nature reserve and recreation area, where the granite cliffs are covered in green forests and the river banks are home to a cycling trail, charming traditional family resorts, and a host of wildlife. Birdsong provides the soundtrack for our scenic sailing, and flocks of swans join us on the Riverside Mozart as well as kayakers, on the Danube.

This Scandinavian Capital is Paying Visitors to Travel Green

Copenhagen is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to sustainable travel. The tourism board of the capital of Denmark is rewarding you to make green choices when you visit this summer as part of a pilot program that could lead the world in helping both locations and visitors to benefit more from travel.

More popular destinations are struggling with growing numbers of visitors and their impact on the environment and local lifestyle. Instead of restricting visitors or imposing surcharges, famously eco-friendly Copenhagen has come up with a program to treat travelers for taking actions that benefit everyone.

CopenPay is a new initiative “transforming green actions into currency for cultural experiences,” says Visit Copenhagen. The city wants to inspire visitors to make conscious “green choices” and help bridge the gap between visitors’ desires to act sustainably and their actual behaviour while in the city. It makes those “green choices” easy, fun… and rewarding.

CopenPay rewards actions such as cycling, participating in cleanup efforts, or volunteering at urban farms with access to a variety of enriching experiences and everyday wonders of Copenhagen. Mikkel Aaro-Hansen, CEO at Wonderful Copenhagen, says the program is inspired to “turn tourism… into a force for positive change, and one important step in this transformation is to change how we move around a destination, what we consume, and how we interact with the locals. With CopenPay we want travellers as well as local attractions to focus on change.”

The hope is not only to continue the pilot project, but also to inspire other cities around the world to introduce similar initiatives that welcome visitors and equally benefit them and the local community.

Floating Restaurant and Food Festival Make a Splash in this Caribbean Destination

St. Martin is re-staking its claim as the culinary capital of the Caribbean with a splashy new eatery and the return for the 4th year of what’s become a signature gastronomic event in the region.

The French half of the dual-nation island of St. Martin and Dutch Saint Maarten is home to Grand Case, a seaside town with a long, idyllic beach and long sunsets. It boasts a perfect setting for romantic beach restaurants, which, given its French connection, deliver cuisine to the exacting standards of mainland France. No wonder Grand Case is on the tasting travel bucket list for foodies in the know.

Balaou Restaurant

Now Grand Case has a new restaurant “landmark” – but it isn’t on the beach. Instead, it floats!

St. Martin’s most talked-about new resto is a delightful floating oasis moored less than 100 yards offshore in the calm, crystal-clear waters of the bay. Imagine yourself whiling away the afternoon from lunch, through drinks, til sunset.

Even with only a tiny, solar-powered kitchen, Balaou manages to serve up an incredible menu of island-flavoured pizzas from lobster to vegan, as well as tapas for sharing and what the locals call ‘bokits’: hefty fried sandwiches with a creative range of fillings.

Signature cocktails include a selection of rums, tequilas and beers – with a signature Piña Colada served for sharing between two in a hollowed-out pineapple and a rum punch served in a coconut shell.

Getting to Balaou is easy, whether by jet ski, powerboat, paddling a kayak or under sail. If you’re landbound with no water transportation, you can just call Balaou and they’ll send over their pontoon taxi. Space on the floating banquettes moored alongside the cookshack is very limited so reservations are a must at this popular new St. Martin culinary landmark, which is open from lunchtime til Grand Case’s famous sunset.

St. Martin Gastronomy Festival

November will see the return of the young, but already must-attend November culinary extravaganza. The 2024 edition of the St. Martin Gastronomy Festival is the 4th celebration, and is scheduled for November 11 – 22.

The now-annual tradition promises innovative and unforgettable experiences for food lovers and travel enthusiasts seeking new flavours and new gastronomic memories with old and new friends.

For over ten days, visitors attend various events centred around gastronomy and mixology, with the opportunity to taste the creations of different participating establishments highlighting the richness and diversity of world cuisine, as well as the local delicacies that make Saint-Martin an internationally renowned gastronomic destination.

In 2024, the festival's featured ingredient will be the legendary Saint-Martin guavaberry.

The extraordinary lineup includes the "Taste of Sunrise" local brunch on the beach, outdoor cooking workshops for adults and children, a village featuring restaurateurs, private chefs, and food trucks from the island, and a closing night where renowned international chefs showcase their specialties. There’s also wine and cheese pairings to delight gourmets in the 2024 edition.
